“Buy before you try” culture fostered by failure to standardise on sizes

A new report by online shopping comparison website Kelkoo shows that many online clothes customers are routinely ordering multiple sizes of clothes when ordering online. According to the report, half a billion pounds worth of items are being returned due to a failure on the part of retailers to standardise on sizing.

Half of the 1500 adults surveyed said that clothes sizes varied between retailers and one in four had problems finding clothes that fitted them. Almost two thirds of respondants took advantage of e-tailers’ free returns policies to order multiple sizes and send back the items that didn’t fit. Chris Simpson, Kelkoo marketing director, warned that the discrepancies between sizing policies was causing considerable confusion amongst online shoppers and needed to be tackled as a matter of urgency. Britain does provide a universal sizing standard but there is no legal requirement for companies to make their products conform to it.
